Female Composer Spotlight: Clara Schumann
by Stephanie Bukuru

Clara Schumann, a pianist and composer who lived from 1819 to 1896, led a life dedicated to writing and performing masterpieces. At the age of four, her father, Friedrich Wieck, started giving her piano lessons under a very strict training routine. Wieck also gave her lessons in voice and violin, but Clara chose the piano as her primary instrument. Recognized as a young prodigy, she began touring Europe at the age of 12. Under her father’s tutelage, she received an elite musical education, which led her to compose magnificent pieces. Her Piano Concerto in A minor remains her most famous composition; remarkably, she composed the work at just 13 years old and performed its premiere only a year later.
Throughout her life, she composed 66 pieces, including chamber music and various piano compositions (both solo and orchestral). She had a significant impact on music, and her influence is still felt today. For instance, many pianists perform recitals from memory, a common practice today that originated with Clara Schumann. During her time, performing from memory was very uncommon. While she was inspired by famous composers such as Bach, she also paved the way for others as a woman in a field where female composers were rare. Her success has made a great impact, inspiring many women to begin composing themselves.
